TEAM PROFILES
RB Ryan Quinn is a returning Class 4A All-State honoree.
WINSTON CHURCHILL
Cumberland would like to extend a warm welcome to the Bulldogs...a team that has never faced Fort Hill on the football field. Churchill will be the largest school to participate in the Queen City Quad with an enrollment of over 2,100 students (Maryland 4A classification). Coach Joe Allen is in his first year as the head coach. Allen played college football in state for Salisbury from 1982-85, during which time the team went 31-10-1 and appeared in the NCAA playoffs in 1983 and ’85. As a receiver he left the school as its all-time leader in career receiving yardage (1,029).

This team is no stranger to competition. Last season wins over Gaithersburg and Northwest were overshadowed by very close losses to powers Quince Orchard, Magruder and Seneca Valley. The 2009 squad will bring plenty of quality players to Cumberland including Class 4A All-State running back Ryan Quinn and one of the better kickers in Maryland by the name of Brian Crutchfield, another Class 4A All-State honoree from last year. A player recruiting scouts will be keeping an eye on is receiver Brandon Swepson. With 6'3 height and 4.4-forty speed the senior is one of the Bulldogs most dangerous weapons. At 6'7 and 280 pounds, offensive tackle John Milbourn looks to have a breakthrough season on the line of scrimmage. Other players to keep an eye on will be running quarterback Alex Cantor, a smart option signal caller who lined up at safety and receiver last fall. Senior linebacker Matt Risk is one of the top tacklers.

Churchill has won two state championships at the Class 4A level in 1976 and 1977 under head coach Fred Shepherd.

FRIENDLY
Friendly is a storied program that has won five state titles (most recently in 2006) and produced one of the top coaches in the history of the state in the late Jim Crawford, who founded the program in 1970. The school's Crawford-Knode Stadium was named after the former head coach who is also a 1956 graduate of Fort Hill High School where he was an All-City running back during the 1954 and 1955 seasons. Crawford was the recipient of Cumberland's 1960 Dapper Dan Top Award while playing football at the University of Miami - Florida.

In the past three seasons Friendly has sent several players on to play college football at the Division I level including Josh Haden (Boston College), Eteyen Edet (Maryland), Devin Wallace (Virginia), Lamaar Thomas (Ohio State), Vincent Hill (Akron), Cornelius Ward (Miami OH) and Joe Haden (Florida).

Fans in Cumberland will get a wonderful chance to see current Florida Gator commitment Jordan Haden play football from his running back / safety position at the Queen City Quad Classic. Jordan will join his brother Joe Haden in Gainesville next fall, as Joe is already an All-SEC cornerback currently playing for the defending national champion.

Friendly was defeated in the Maryland Class 3A Regional Semifinals last season by eventual state champion Westlake. The longtime ties between Fort Hill and Friendly finally come to fruition on the field when the Patriots visit Greenway Avenue Stadium for the first head-to-head meeting.

Running back/safety Jordan Haden has already committed to the Florida Gators.
Kevin Erickson rushed for an area-best 2,066 yards and 27 TDs in the Windber single wing offense.

WINDBER
The Ramblers have a long-standing rich tradition in Western Pennsylvania football. In fact, Windber was the first team Fort Hill High School ever played when the Johnson Heights School opened in 1936. Windber beat Coach Bobby Cavanaugh’s squad soundly in the debut of Sentinel football by a final score of 54-6. Windber visited Fort Hill Stadium the following year in 1937 to thrash John J. Long's Fort Hill team 56-6. Losing to Windber was nothing to be ashamed of as the Ramblers were only beaten once in 53 games during the 1930s. Going into that 1936 Fort Hill debut, the Coaltowners as they were called, had won 29 consecutive games, which dated back to a 1933 state championship. Windber has an all-time winning record over the Sentinels with victories in four of the seven match ups. The last time the two schools met was in 1965 with Windber registering a 27-13 victory over coach Charlie Lattimer's squad.

Carl D. Mayer has written a book covering the storied history of Winder High School Football entitled "We Are The Ramblers". Click HERE to learn more and obtain a copy of his book.

Last season Windber won nine games, which included a victory over Conemaugh Valley in the Pennsylvania State playoffs. Windber’s 2008 effort ended in the post-season with a loss to eventual state runner-up Clairton. The Johnstown Tribune-Democrat named head coach Phil DeMarco Area Coach of the Year. He also won the award in 2000.
